19 Cents an Hour

Feeding Kids One Workout at a Time

Welcome to my 19 Cents an Hour campaign website. My name is Greg and over the next 6 months I’ll be asking people to donate 19 cents for every hour I spend training for my first Ironman distance triathlon. All tax deductible donations will go the World Food Programme’s 19 Cents a Day campaign, which provides a school lunch to hungry kids around the world. Please read on to learn how you can help in the fight against global hunger by making an online donation.

What It's All About

School girls in Sierra Leone

WFP focuses on girls because in many male-dominated cultures they may be denied an education

As a triathlete I know how important nutrition is to my training and racing. All of my experience, desire and determination won't get me through a tough workout or across the finish line if I don't pay close attention to what I eat and drink. Without proper nutrition there is no way I could perform to my full potential.

For many kids from developing nations around the world this is exactly the situation they face. But their race is for something far more important. It's a race to a good education, their best chance at breaking out of a chronic cycle of poverty, disease and hunger. Many of the 300,000,000 kids who face hunger on a daily basis come from families who simply can't afford to provide them with a school lunch, if they are lucky enough to attend at all. Something as small as a lunchtime meal can have a huge positive impact on their studies and consequently, the rest of their lives.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has responded to this situation with its 19 Cents a Day campaign, an effort to help feed more of these chronically hungry children around the world who don't receive a meal while in class. For 19 cents, WFP's school feeding programme guarantees a daily lunch for a hungry student and for just $34, they can feed a student for a whole school year.

Changing Days to Hours

My campaign changes days to hours, asking people to donate 19 cents for every hour I spend training, from January 2 to June 25, 2006, in preparation for my first Ironman distance triathlon in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. My goal is to provide 50,000 school lunches for children around the world through the World Food Programme's 19 Cents a Day Campaign.
